Terry Lynn Smith - Painter

Artist's Statement:

So often it takes a life threatening experience to show us who we really are. I turned to painting after being struck with several serious illnesses. My paintings are meant to represent struggle and the conflict of pain while portraying a since of beauty and the will to live. My portraits illustrate the beauty that resides within despite outer flaws and physical imperfections, reminding us that one's true beauty is found in the eye of the soul. I share my experiences and fears openly as they appear on my canvas - from the battle of losing one's breasts to the creation of a surgically reconstructed life - from having the world in the palm of my hand to not having the strength to get out of bed.

Art has become the greatest therapy in my life and is the strongest of my pain medicines. My dream is to share my images with others like myself and let them know they are not suffering alone. When people come into my studio and whisper to me, "When I had breast cancer..." or "Can I give you a hug?" - I know that my paintings have been successful. So many women face medical issues as mine, but are afraid to talk about it. I was too, but now have stepped out and am telling my story through my paintings. I am determined to make this contribution while I am still physically able.

I was recently signing a print for a 6 year old girl when she looked up at me and asked if I would teach her to paint. I later discovered from her mother that the girl suffers from sickle cell anemia.

Everything happens for a reason and if I'd never been ill, Id' have never slowed down to discover I had the gift to paint. I have finally found my purpose in life.
