OPENING FRIDAY JULY 27th 7-10pm at Art Works 320 Hull St. Richmond, VA 23224 *Free and Open to the Public* ...On display through August 19th.
LAYERS: Contemporary Painters Working with Rich Surfaces Destry Sparks, Al Montgomery, Emily Rutledge, Anna Marie Troupe.
These artists collaborate to bring this mixed media exhibit to Art Works. Destry Sparks is the curator as well as one of the exhibiting artists. Art Works met Destry through our monthly call-for-entries for All Media Exhibits. He is from Greenville, North Carolina, and is a contemporary mixed media painter using found objects to create a visceral effect upon the surface of his works. He brings a very tangible element to painting. Sparks exhibits in North Carolina Virginia and southern California has won numerous awards.
In February 2011, Destry brought a solo show exhibit of his work to Art Works. At that time he was organizing like-minded artists exhibits and so we offered to curate a show of x artists in 2012 at Art Works. Thus LAYERS was planned. Al Montgomery Al has shown around the US but also in Vienna, Emily Rutledge exhibits in Chicago and Anna Marie Troupe at UNC Charlotte, NC.
Al Montgomery: "First of all, I am a painter working between figuration and abstraction. The rupture between figuration and abstraction is where I find associations that are both personal and universal. There are no prescriptions, cannons, or rules for making images in this territory.
Working in this way moves me in directions that are non-linear, circuitous, and indirect…There is absolutely no way to predict the outcome. It’s in the physical action of piling up layers of paint, mucking things up, creating and destroying, moving ahead and falling back that I begin to see the possibilities emerge. Surfaces are important. Rich textural surfaces and superimposed figures meld in the recent mixed-media paintings."

FLOATING IMAGES by Gary Yaw "By doing my artwork, I am able to achieve a state of mind that is free of emotional pain and anguish. It is a right-brain activity which taps into spontaneity, intuition, and feelings. I have been doing artwork all my life, and it has become even more important because it is a tool I use to relieve my symptoms and remind me what it was like for me when I was not depressed. In short, my artwork makes me happy, and I can define myself as an artist instead of being psychiatrically disabled.
Gary Yaw has done artwork since he was a toddler. Gary's first art show was when he was seventeen and attending Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs. Gary attended the University of Nebraska and received a BFA in art. Gary has worked in graphic design for 23 years. His last position was a Senior Art Director. Gary has attended VCU and received a degree in art education. Gary has exhibited his artwork at cooperative galleries, including Art Works. Gary enjoys socializing with friends, cooking and spending time with his cat."
