Artist Statement :

Mary Vivo was born in Brooklyn, New York. She attended The Cooper Union School of Art and The School of Visual Arts. Mary has exhibited at numerous group shows including, Art Works' All-Media Exhibitions in Richmond, VA, the 64th Annual Art of Northeast in New Caanan, CT and the Nor’Easter 44th Annual Juried Exhibition at the New Britain Museum of Art in New Britain, CT. Mary and her art were featured in the March 2014 issue of Hartford Magazine.

Her work combines the use of a variety of materials including wood, colored pencil, paper, markers and acrylic paint to create what she calls Housculptures – miniature models of structures and their surroundings

"Creating Housculptures helps me connect with various structures and their surroundings and to show their importance and simplicity. An old barn, once vital but perhaps forgotten, is resurrected. A subway station's graffiti defines the 1970s. My use of wood, colored pencil, paper, markers and paint help shape each piece.

The subject, which has evolved from single buildings to scenes, landmarks, and events, is usually connected to an important memory – my grandfather’s house, an Italian festival, an old Brooklyn landmark. The materials I select help mimic the original structure and landscape.

My current work brings together my past and present: my past love of certain places and my exploration of new places and buildings along with my love for detail.

The piece is complete after I add minor, but important individual nuances that breath life into each Housculpture. " - Mary Vivo
